ICCROM-UNESCO Capacity Building for Holistic, Sustainable and Resilient Heritage Recovery of Mosul

About The Project

Mosul: The Linking Point

The City of Mosul, meaning “the linking point" in Arabic, is home to a wealth of cultural and religious diversity. With significant shrines dedicated to three monotheistic religions, and other outstanding historical buildings and sites, the city’s heritage and importance transcends millennia.
However, the strategic location that has made Mosul a cultural crossroads throughout history also made it a target for ISIS. In June 2014, Mosul became the largest city to fall to the terrorist organization. The damage to the city’s cultural heritage and surrounding areas during the conflicts has been devastating.

Track 1: Professional Development for Architects & Engineers

Track 1 covers all aspects of urban heritage recovery, from context and situation analysis, significance and value assessment, documentation, planning, implementation, to monitoring.
Theoretical lectures are coupled with intensive fieldwork exercises at buildings in Old Mosul chosen for use as a case study for the students.

The Impact of Conflict

In the aftermath of these horrific events of the recent past, the resolve of the people of Mosul to restore their city is strong. Several projects grouped under the initiative Revive the Spirit of Mosul have been developed on the road to recover the rich heritage.
The Heritage Recovery Programme in Mosul is unique in every sense. It is a collaboration between ICCROM, UNESCO, the Iraqi Government, and the University of Mosul that was made possible with the support of our partners, the United Arab Emirates, and the European Union.

Track2: Crafts Revivals & Upgrading for Craftspeople

Track 2 was developed in the spirit of “building back better” and will give craft workers the opportunity to enhance their skills, taking into consideration affordability, sustainability, as well as the ground realities.

The aim of both tracks is to build the capacities of young and motivated Moslawis to actively contribute to the overall recovery progress currently taking place in Mosul.
