Curriculum

  Personal safety and the safe use of tools and raw materials.

  Types of wood, sizes and shapes, and the rules of handling timber.

  Lectures on plywood, mahogany, oak, beech, and other types of wood.

  Lectures on medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and high-density fiberboard (HDF).

  Lectures on the provenance of various types of wood (Russia, China, Burma, Turkey) and              their use in carpentry.

  Lecture and practical exercises taking measurements, cutting wood, basic joinery                          techniques in the production of furniture and door panels.
  Production of wooden plywood panels based on samples of different dimensions based on          the availability in the local market.

  Production of doors and pieces of furniture using modern techniques.

  Production of modern doors.

  Practice session on the use of carpentry machinery.

  Production of a traditional mahogany doors using lock-and-key technique.

  Field visits to modern carpentry workshops focusing on the use of MDF and DHF wood.
  Field visits to traditional houses in Mosul focusing on installing doors and the production of        door frames of various types and various costs.

  On-site exercises on taking exact measurements to produce mahogany frames and panels,          window frames and installing glass panels in a heritage context.

  Production of traditional window panels based on old mahogany window panels using the            lock-and-key technique.

  Field visits to modern workshops focusing on the production of traditional chairs.

  Production of a set of traditional chairs based on different models.

  Exercises on traditional dyeing techniques, treatment techniques of wood, and the repair of          old and damages wood elements.

Evaluation Criteria

The evaluation was two-fold and took place during the workshop as the master carpenter and the track supervisor evaluated the trainees based on their performance and progress, on one hand, while a formal assessment took place at the end of the workshop to evaluate the participant’s theoretical knowledge, and their skills in producing and assembling parts and furniture pieces.
